Our “Awesome” God
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesIt’s an often-used word, and we hear it in the most unusual contexts — it’s the word “awesome.” Webster’s dictionary provides us this definition: “expressive of awe” or “inspiring awe.“
The word “awe” is defined as:
“an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime <stood in awe of the king> <regard nature’s wonders with awe>“
The Online Etymology Dictionary defines this term as:
Current sense of “dread mixed with veneration” is due to biblical use with ref. to the Supreme Being.
My family and I remember the time that we stood on the south rim of the Grand Canyon (see video) admiring God’s creative beauty That was truly an “awesome” experience.
However, there’s an even more awe-inspiring reality — it’s knowing the Creator and Sustainer of the entire universe (Isaiah 42:5; Zechariah 12:1; Acts 17:25; Hebrews 1:1-3). No wonder the Psalmist wrote:
“The LORD Most High is awesome” (Psalm 47:2).
The next time we hear the word “awesome,” may it remind us of our great God, whose glory and creative ability is indeed awesome! (see video).
