If There Were No God

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles Tags:

There are many people in our world today who truly and sincerely believe that there is no sovereign God that governs our world and universe. For a few moments, let’s explore that possibility, and see what would happen if there were indeed no God.

1) If there were no God, there would be no final accounting for all that exists — Mankind has always sought to understand the ultimate origin of the universe. How did the world and all its inhabitants come to be? How do we account for the vast heavenly expanse of stars and planets? Where did man himself originate?

The answers to the above questions would never be known if the idea of a creator God is rejected. There will always be many new ingenious “theories” to explain origins, as there have always been in the past. But, like their predecessors, these “theories” will eventually be rejected as irrational, because true laws of science and rational thought will disprove them as being false. Without God and His word, man would be forever doomed to uncertainty, left to wonder in ignorance about the beginning and end of all created things, including himself.

Yes, the Bible teaches there will be a final accounting (Romans 14:10-NKJV; 2 Corinthians 5:10-NKJV; cf. Gal. 6:7-NKJV; Ephesians 6:8 -NKJV; Revelation 22:12-NKJV).

2) If there were no God, there would be no moral standards to live by — We often speak of what is right and what is wrong — what is good and evil. But if God did not exist, these concepts would just be creations of each man’s mind (cf. Judges 17:6-NKJV; Judges 21:25-NKJV). If all morality were of a subjective nature, any kind of behavior would be justifiable.

In his novel, The Brothers Karamazov, Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky had one of his characters, Ivan, comment:

If there is no God, everything is permitted.

The effects of this belief would be devastating on not only our society, but all societies. Fortunately, there is a standard of morality and moral behavior — of right and wrong — and that standard is found within the pages of Holy Writ — the Bible (Matthew 4:4-NKJV; cf. Deuteronomy 8:1-3-NKJV; Psalm 119:11-NKJV). Also see Isaiah 45:18-19-NKJV, and note the fact that the Lord “speaks righteousness” and declares things that are “right.”

3) If there were no God, there would be no life beyond the grave — We would be just like Rover — dead all over! Our life would then be without purpose or meaning. All happiness would be a fruitless quality. Hopeless despair would be our only reward (1 Corinthians 15:19-NKJV; Ephesians 2:11-12-NKJV; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-NKJV).

Thankfully, we have been provided abundant evidence, not only through true scientific evidence derived from the physical creation (Romans 1:19-20-NKJV; Psalm 19:1-6-NKJV; Psalm 148-NKJV), but through the inspired Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16-ASV; cf. Gal. 1:11-12-NKJV; Ephesians 3:1-3-NKJV) to believe in the existence of God — the only true and living God (Mark 12:26-27-NKJV; Luke 20:37-38-NKJV; cf. Matthew 16:16-NKJV; John 20:28-NKJV; Acts 8:37-NKJV; Acts 9:20-NKJV).

Conclusion:

Beloved friends — God is and has always existed (cf. Exodus 3:14-NKJV; Isaiah 43:13-NKJV; John 8:58-NKJV; John 17:5,24-NKJV; Colossians 1:17-NKJV; Revelation 1:8-NKJV), there is no other God (cf. Deuteronomy 4:35-NKJV; Deuteronomy 32:39-NKJV; 1 Samuel 2:1-2-NKJV; Isaiah 44:8-NKJV; Isaiah 45:5-6,18,20-22-NKJV), and no declaration from the mind of any mortal man can change that immutable fact (Psalm 119:89-NKJV).

Because God is, and because He has revealed His will to us as His created beings (Matthew 10:24-27-NKJV; John 15:14-15-NKJV; Ephesians 3:1-5-NKJV), we now know the answer to the questions as to where we came from (Genesis 1:26-27-NKJV; Genesis 2:7-NKJV; Ecclesiastes 7:29-NKJV), how to live moral and godly lives (Romans 6-NKJV; Gal. 5:13-26-NKJV; Ephesians 4:17-32-NKJV; Ephesians 6:10-18-NKJV; Philippians 2:12-16-NKJV; Colossians 3-NKJV; Colossians 4:1-6-NKJV; 2 Peter 1:1-11-NKJV), and where we are going when this earthly life is over (Ecclesiastes 12:7-NKJV; Matthew 25-NKJV; Philippians 1:23-NKJV; 2 Timothy 4:6-NKJV).

Let’s give praise, glory and honor to the only true and living God! (Revelation 5:11-14-NKJV; Revelation 14:1-7-NKJV).
