“A Little Ice Cream Is Good For The Soul”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesA father once took his family to a restaurant. Before the meal, his 6-year-old son prayed, “Thank You, Lord for the food, and I would even thank You more if Mom got us some ice cream. Amen!”
Hearing the little boy, a woman sitting nearby said indignantly, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Imagine asking God for ice cream!” The boy overheard her and burst into tears. Just then an elderly gentleman came by, winked at the little boy, and whispered to him, “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul.”
When dessert came, the boy picked up his sundae, walked over to the lady’s table, set it before her, and with a big smile said, “This is for you, lady. A little ice cream is good for the soul, and my soul is good already.”
This young boy demonstrated the kind of selfless humility that our Lord talked about in Matthew Chapter 18. When the Lord’s disciples asked Him, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He told them they must emulate the humility and trust of little children (Matthew 18:1-4). Brethren, let’s remember that our faith shines brightest in a childlike heart.
God, give me the faith of a little child
Who trusts so implicitly,
Who simply and gladly believes Thy Word,
And never would question Thee. —Showerman
