How Should Christians Dress?
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesThere’s a controversy in the world regarding how we should properly dress before our fellow man. Some folks obviously think that the less clothing we wear, the “cooler” we become (this is not always true – see No. 3 – Cover up).
In this short article, let us see what the Bible says about proper spiritual dress for the Christian:
- We are to put on the garment of love (Colossians 3:14; cf. 1 Corinthians 13:1-7).
- We are to put on the garment of compassion and kindness (Luke 10:33-35; cf. Genesis 50:15-21).
- We are to put on the garment of forgiveness (Luke 17:1-7).
- We are to put on the garment of humility (Philippians 2:5-8; James 4:10).
- We are to put on the garment of God’s word (Ephesians 6:11-17).
- We are to put on the garment of steadfastness (1 Corinthians 15:58).
- We are to put on the garment of purity (Matthew 5:1-12; Hebrews 12:14; 1 Peter 1:22).
- We are to put on the garment of the new man (Ephesians 4:24).
- We are to put on the garment of light (Romans 13:12; cf. Ephesians 6:13).
- We are to put on the garment of mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forbearance, forgiveness, love (Colossians 3:12-14; cf. Ephesians 4:1-2).
- We are to put on the garment of Christ (His holy and righteous character – Romans 13:14; cf. Gal. 2:20; 1 Peter 2:21-24; 1 John 2:6).
Those individuals who have not yet rendered obedience to Christ and His salvation plan in order to become a Christian, must put on (be clothed with) Christ (Gal. 3:27 NASB) in order to gain entrance into the body of Christ (the church – Ephesians 1:22-23; Ephesians 5:23; cf. Acts 2:47).
