God's Desire For Spiritual Unity

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

God is the promoter for spiritual unity among men. In fact, He wants all men to be of one mind (Philippians 1:27). If all men will believe God’s truth and practice only God’s truth, unity will prevail. All will be of one heart and soul (Acts 4:32).

Paul’s plea to be of one mind (1 Corinthians 1:10) was neither empty nor impossible, for the apostles had “the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). All who accept their teaching will be of one mind by letting “this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5).

Unity between believers and non-believers is both impossible and undesirable. In fact, Christ came to divide the obedient from the rebellious (Matthew 10:34-36). The Lord expects His saints to be separate from the world (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). Love for truth must come before love for peace with men.

The Christian who determines to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) may find himself alienated from friends. The result may be similar to the Apostle Paul’s statement that:

At my first defense no man stood with me, but all forsook me ….. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:16-17).

The Christian will soon discover a common bond with the other kingdom seekers. Love for God and truth will draw them toward one another. Patience in personal matters will grow from respect for each other and open Bibles will produce “one faith” (Ephesians 4:5).

They will approach the idea of being one “in Christ,” because the mind of Christ rules in each one (Philippians 2:5).
