Genesis 12:4-5

Such was the faith of Abraham. God commanded and he obeyed. This was a great object lesson for the Israelite nation. They were undergoing a journey when they first heard this. Theirs was a journey commanded by God. They had the opportunity to obey and identify with their father Abraham. Sadly, few of them lived up to that challenge (Num. 26:64-65).

The departure of Abraham from Ur of the Chaldees is parallel to the departure sinners must make to become Christians. Notice the words of the apostle Paul:

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Christians have left behind the things of this world to go to a place commanded by God which they know nothing of. Becoming a child of God they are given a new name (Christian, Acts 11:26) and a new kingdom (Col. 1:13).
