Do We Have A “Bus Schedule” Philosophy?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Several years ago, there was a news story of a man who had set some kind of a record by having been married and divorced twenty-six times. He was seventy years old at the time, and the father of forty children.

Evidently, he was proud of his record, because according to the news report, he was seriously considering wife number twenty-seven. The report went on to say that this man’s philosophy was that marriage was similar in nature to a bus schedule. If one wife does not work out, there will always be another one come along shortly.

Guess this gentleman never read Malachi 2:16-NKJV, which states:

For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, For it covers one’s garment with violence, Says the Lord of hosts. Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously.”

God specifically says in this passage, that “He hates divorce.” Unfortunately, there are a host of folks in our world, who don’t have the same mindset toward marriage as God does. They look upon their spouses with the same “bus schedule philosophy” as the man in the above story.

When our wife or husband doesn’t work out, according to this philosophy — we’ll just wait until “another one comes along” (one much younger and more physically attractive, of course!).

Brethren and friends, may the day soon come when the words, “what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matthew 19:6-NKJV) and “till death do us part” (implied in Romans 7:1-2-NKJV) will be taken seriouslywith eternity in mind (note the words, “fornicator, adulterer, and sexually immoral” in Hebrews 13:4-NKJV; cf. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10-NKJV; Revelation 21:8-NKJV; Revelation 22:14-15-NKJV).
