SUBJECT: Perseverance
TITLE: Be Not Weary in Well Doing
PROPOSITION: Why ought we be not weary in well doing? Because in doing good there is a 1) Reward 2) Need 3) Example.
OBJECTIVE: To encourage everyone to be not weary in well doing, but to continually be faithful to the Lord.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: 2 Thessalonians 3:6-18
2. About the Text:
1) The church at Thessalonica was relatively new when Paul wrote this epistle.
2) And like all new churches, they had some problems.
3) There were some who believed in the imminent return of Christ.
4) As a result, some of them had stopped working and were behavior like busybodies.
5) Paul had to write this second epistle to correct this misunderstanding.
6) His instructions to the fledgling church were to withdraw from those who were being disorderly.
7) Such is never an easy process.
8) Moreover, these faithful brethren may have been discouraged by those who were not working.
9) Paul encouraged them, however, not to be weary in well doing.
3. About today.
1) Today there are times when we may be discouraged as well.
2) Perhaps we’re discouraged by the circumstances of our life.
3) Maybe our job isn’t working out like we think it should.
4) Perhaps our family relationships are a struggle.
5) Perhaps we see some brethren not being faithful to the word of God like those in Thessalonica.
6) The temptation is to give up and quit doing what we know we need to do.
7) At such times we need to remember Paul’s words of encouragement.
8) “Be not weary in well doing.”
9) Let’s think of some reasons why we ought not to be weary in well doing.

DISCUSSION: In being not weary in well doing, that is, in doing good, there is…
I. A Reward
1. Why ought we not to be weary in well doing? There is great reward in doing good.
2. There is an intrinsic reward.
1) There is in doing good an intrinsic reward.
2) That is, when we do good things, they are, in and of themselves, rewarding.
3) Consider Paul’s thoughts in 1 Corinthians 9:18: “What is my reward then? Verily that, when I preach the gospel, I may make the gospel of Christ without charge, that I abuse not my power in the gospel.”
4) Jesus said, John 13:17 “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”
5) Consider also the parable of the wise and foolish man. Matthew 7:24-25 “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
3. There is also eternal reward.
1) Matthew 5:12 “Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
2) Colossians 3:24 “Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”
3) Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
4) Revelation 22:12: And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
4. Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
II. Need
1. Why ought we not to be weary in well doing? Because there is a great need!
1) Edmund Burke is attributed as saying, “All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing.”
2) Peter wrote, “For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men” (1 Peter 2:15).
2. If we consider ourselves to be good folks, then let us do good.
1) Jesus said, “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” (Luke 6:35)
2) Heb 13:16 “But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”
3. We must seek to overcome evil with good.
1) Romans 12:21 “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”
2) 1 Peter 3:8-9 “Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing.”
4. Let us not be weary in well doing because when we do good we satisfy a great need.
III. An Example
1. When we are not weary in well doing and we do good things we set a good example for others.
1) Consider Dorcas/Tabitha.
2) Acts 9:36 “Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.”
3) She was a woman full of good works and she remains a great example for us today.
4) Consider also the example of the woman who anointed Jesus at the house of Simon the leper.
5) Jesus said, “She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.” (Mark 14:8-9)
6) Her example lives for us today.
7) 1 Timothy 5:25 speaks in this regard also, “So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.”
5. In setting a good example, we bring glory to God.
1) Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
2) Consider Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
3) Psalms 86:12 “I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.”
4) 1 Corinthians 6:20 “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
6. Let us not be weary in well doing, for in doing good, we set a good example.
CONCLUSION:
1. We ought not to be weary in well doing because…
1) There is great reward in doing good.
2) There is a great need for us to do good.
3) We set a great example and glorify God when we do good.
