Barbs …. With A Point

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The following barbs of wisdom come from The Sword and Staff publication, 2012, Volume 50, Number 3; pg. 13 (appropriate Scriptures and related articles have been added):

  • The statutes of limitation do not run out on sin in the courts of heaven.
  • When you leave this world (and you will), it is forever; so you better make sure where you are going now, for there is no coming back.
  • If you never get right with God, when you die, you will be dead wrong forever (Romans 6:23).
  • Religious motivation geared to the flesh will attract fleshly people whose real interest is not spiritual, but fleshly (and the spiritual life of the church will be further “dumbed down“).
  • To talk to people about salvation, and never mention sin, is to miss the point of what salvation is all about.
  • We are approaching the point where we can fall from grace when we stop growing in the grace and knowledge of the Lord (2 Peter 1:5-10; 2 Peter 3:17-18).
  • It seems the spiritually “dumb as an ox” must always run with the heard (worldly crowd – Isaiah 1:2-4).
  • To think that we must have recreational programs and entertainment to keep the young people interested in the church, is to admit that we have failed as families and as a church in getting across to our young people what the church is all about.
  • Those who don’t like the company of Christians, won’t have to worry about that in eternity.
  • Church attendance is not determined by how far or how close we live to the church, but by how close we live to the Lord.
  • If you have expensive tastes, and they are not subdued, you will eventually find life tasteless.
  • It is easy for people who are shallow to go off on the deep end.
  • Modern psychiatry (and much of today’s religion) would look upon the value of Christianity only as a “placebo” tool in dealing with human problems (while not really having any convictions about sin, salvation and redemption).
  • Proverbs 16:31 says that “the hoary head is a crown of glory,” but obviously most modern day women don’t believe this.
  • Compromising churches are ideal settings for hireling preachers, as church and preachers complement and accommodate one another.
  • It probably can be said that most marriage problems are caused by selfishness in one way or another (see article).
  • The “strange woman“ as identified in the book of Proverbs (Proverbs 5:1-5), seems to be no longer regarded as strange in our modern society.
  • Who is the most to be pitied? A child afraid of the dark, or an adult afraid of the light? (John 3:19-20).
  • People who are preoccupied with the (public) “image” need to remember that in the Bible, images were idols (Exodus 32; Daniel 3) .
  • An inordinate preoccupation with things makes thieves and robbers out of us (Acts 5:1-11).
  • Baptism cannot take the place of repentance.
