Are sponsoring churches scriptural?

Categories: Bible Questions and Answers

We have a member who does not believe in Sponsoring Congregations? Do you and what is the scriptural authority for them?

Sponsoring churches are scriptural. In Philippians 4:15, Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, “Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.” The church at Philippi was the only church that sent money to Paul at this time. Yet, we see from 2 Cor. 11:8 that Paul said he “robbed other churches” (plural). Well, if Philippi was the only one sending and receiving, yet Paul took money from churches (plural) then those churches must have been sending to Philippi first and then Paul received his support directly from Philippi. That’s a sponsoring church.
