Wisdom And The Preexistent Christ

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

In Proverbs 8, we see wisdom as being “possessed” by the Lord “in the beginning” (Proverbs 8:22 KJV; John 1:2) — the same Lord who is the [Logos] Word — the creative agent, instrumental in the creation of all things (John 1:3; Psalm 33:6).

It’s interesting to note that in 1 Corinthians 1:24, Paul refers to Christ as “the wisdom of God.” In Colossians 1:15-16, Paul refers to Christ as “the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; for in him all things were created.”

The Hebrew writer in Hebrews 1:2, describes the eternal Christ as the One “through whom also he [God] made the worlds” (cf. Proverbs 3:19; Hebrews 3:4). Also, note the word “everlasting” in Proverbs 8:23, Psalm 41:13, and Psalm 106:48.

In looking at the above passages of Scripture, it is logical to conclude that the wisdom talked about in Proverbs 8:22-31 and the preexistent Christ who created all things (Colossians 1:15-16), are one in the same — both being “everlasting.”
