Aim: To encourage all to prepare so that Jesus will find us watching.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Matthew 25:1-13

2. About the Text:

1) Here we find the parable of the ten virgins.

2) Five were wise and five were foolish.

3) The wise brought extra oil and were prepared for a long wait.

4) The foolish did not.

5) The result was that they ran out of oil and had to get more.

6) During the time that they were gone, the bridegroom came.

7) They didn’t go into the wedding feast because they were not prepared.

3. Song — “When Jesus Comes” (754 in “Praise for the Lord”)

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION: For Jesus to find us watching, we must . . .

I.   Be Prepared

1. Who must prepare?

1) The whole world — Mark 16:15

2) All men everywhere — Acts 2:30, 31

2. For what must we be prepared?

1) For judgment.

2) Acts 10:42 “And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.”

3) 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ…”

3. Why must we be prepared?

1) Because we do not know when the end will come.

2) It could be in death.

a. Hebrews 9:27 — It is appointed that we die.

b. James 4:15 — If the Lord will, we shall live…

3) It could be the Lord’s return.

a. Matthew 24:36 — Of that day and hour knows no man.

b. Matthew 24:42 — You know not the hour.

4) It is due to the uncertainty of this life that we must prepare.

4. When must we prepare?

1) Now! — 2 Corinthians 6:2

2) And always — Luke 12:35-40

5. How do we prepare?

1) Get into a right relationship with God. How? Mark 16:16

2) Remain in a right relationship with God. How? Rev.2:10

II.  Be Patient

1. Patience keeps us faithful to the Lord.

1) Consider the parable of the sower. Luke 8:11-15

2) Only one was patient, the good ground.

2. Patience keeps us watching for the Lord.

1) Consider Mark 13:32-37

2) Jesus has gone on a far journey, but is returning.

3) We, as his servants, have work to do.

4) Will we watch or sleep? 1 Thess. 5:6 “Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”

3. Patience keeps us working in the Lord

1) Matthew 24:45, 46 “Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.”

2) 1 Corinthians 15:58

4. Patience ultimately will bring us to the Lord.

1) Hebrews 12:1, 2

2) James 5:7-11

III. Expect Consequences

1. There are good consequences for proper preparation.

1) Matthew 24:46, 47 “Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.”

2) Luke 12:44-47

2. There are bad consequences for improper preparation.

1) Matthew 24:48-51

2) Consider that those in 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 were not prepared.

a. Some were not prepared because they did not know God.

b. Some because they did not obey the gospel.

CONCLUSION:As we conclude this sermon on end times…

1. Will Jesus find us watching? Let us…

1) Be prepared.

2) Be patient.

3) Expect consequences.
