We Will “Come Forth”
Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin ArticlesWhen my beloved mother passed from this life, almost two years ago, my father, brothers and I attended the graveside services. My brother assigned me the task of giving the eulogy.
After her burial, we later returned to leave flowers and stood with heads bowed in memory and respect of her godly life. Our loved one was dead, and we knew we would never see her again this side of eternity (2 Samuel 12:15-23; cf. Job 7:6-10).
However, a different scene existed when Jesus went to the cemetery (John 11:1-38). His friend Lazarus had died, and when Jesus got to the tomb, He exercised His power and authority by commanding those present to “Take away the stone” (John 11:39).
And then He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” (John 11:43). When Lazarus came forth still bound with grave clothes, He then said, “Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:44).
If we were to give those same commands that our Lord uttered, nothing would happen. But Jesus has that ability, for He is “the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).
Brethren and friends, one day, Jesus will again be “at the cemetery.” And when He gives the command, all the dead who rendered obedience to Him (Matthew 7:21) will “come forth” (John 5:28-29; 1 Thessalonians 4:16).
What a joyous occasion that will be — to forever be with the Lord! (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 KJV; cf. John 17:24).
