Using The Five-Finger Prayer Method

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles Tags:

Although prayer is simply our conversing with God, there are perhaps times we could use a “method” to freshen up our prayer life. Recently, I discovered a five-finger prayer method we might consider using as a guide when we pray for others:

1) When we fold our hands, our thumb is nearest to us. So let’s begin by praying for those closest to us — for example, our fellow Christians (Philippians 1:1-5).

2) The index finger is our pointer finger. Let’s pray for those who teach God’s word — (Ephesians 6:18-19; Colossians 4:2-3; 1 Thessalonians 5:25), that they might “point” others to Christ (cf. Acts 5:42; Acts 8:34-35; Acts 18:24-28).

3) Our middle finger is the tallest. It reminds us to pray for those in authority over us — national and local leaders — even our supervisor at work (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

4) The fourth finger is usually the weakest. Let’s pray for those who are spiritually weak, in trouble, or who are suffering (Gal. 6:1; James 5:13-16).

5) The fifth finger is our little finger. It reminds us of our smallness in relation to God’s greatness. Let’s ask Him to supply all our needs (Philippians 4:6; Philippians 4:19).

Whatever prayer method we decide to use, let’s make sure that we communicate with our heavenly Father often (Luke 18:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:17). For He wants to hear what’s on our heart (James 5:16; cf. 2 Kings 20:1-6).
