2. About the Text:

I.   The Faithful Woman in Ecclesiastical Responsibilities.

1. A faithful Christian

1) One who is faithful in attendance. Hebrews 10:25

2) One who is faithful in example. Philippians 3:17 “Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.”

3) A faithful woman in modesty. 1 Tim. 2:9 “In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

4) One who seeks the kingdom of God first. Matthew 6:33

5) One who puts Christ in their life. Gal. 2:20

2. A faithful servant.

1) One cannot be a Christian and not be a servant–Philippians 2:5

2) Phoebe–Romans 16:1-2 “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.”

3) Dorcas–Acts 9:36ff

3. A faithful teacher.

1) Hebrews 5:12 “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.” eg. Priscilla and Aquila.

2) Teach the younger women–Titus 2:3-5 “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

3) Where she cannot teach–1 Tim. 2:11-15 “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.”

4. A faithful widow–an office. 1 Tim. 5:1-16

1) There are several widows in the context.

a. Widows indeed.

b. Widows that give themselves to pleasure. vs. 6

c. Enrolled Widow

d. Younger Widow

e. Widows with caring families

2) Verses 9, 10 sound strangely like “qualifications.”

3) Verse 10 says refuse younger widows–why?

II.  The Faithful Woman in  Connubial Responsibilities.

1. A faithful helper.

1) Genesis 2:18 “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

2) 1 Corinthians 11:9 “Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.”

3) Titus 2:3-5 “The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.”

2. A faithful wife.

1) Hebrews 13:4

2) Ephesians 5:22-33

3. A faithful friend.

1) Genesis 2:18ff

2) The example of Sarah, a faithful woman.

III. The Faithful Woman in Parental Responsibilities.

1. A faithful mother.

2) Compare Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

3) Lois, Eunice–Timothy’s grandmother and mother–2 Timothy 1:5

2. A faithful home provider. “Keeper of the home” “Rule the home”–read Proverbs 31:10-31

3. A faithful friend. Ruth 1:16-17 “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.”
