“Super” Bowl Or “Stupor” Bowl?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Stupor BowlThe news media hype over the upcoming 47th Super Bowl causes more of a sense of “stupor” rather than something that is “super“ (after all it‘s just another football game with highly overpaid players, is it not?).

The word “stupor” is defined as, “suspension or great diminution of sensibility, as in disease or as caused by narcotics, intoxicants, etc., as “He lay there in a drunken stupor.

Thus, this writer would classify the upcoming “Super” Bowl as the “Stupor” Bowl.

Not only will the cost of a Super Bowl ticket be astronomical (the lowest priced ticket being $2,387 and the highest priced ticket being $13,120), but beer consumption will be astronomical as well. According to Saveonbrew.com, “50 million cases of beer will be consumed, resulting in more than 2 billion gallons of water used to flush away that much beer consumed, with roughly 7 million people calling in sick after the Super Bowl” (source).

If the above statistics are correct, not only will Super (“Stupor”) Bowl fans be highly inebriated (see article), they will also cause a great loss of revenue for the companies they work for because of their absence on the Monday after the Super (“Stupor“) Bowl.

It’s sad to contemplate that some members of the Lord’s church will also absent themselves from the assembly on Sunday evening because of the Super Bowl (Hebrews 10:25); and even sadder is that some congregations of the Lord’s people will not conduct evening services because of the “Stupor” event (game starts at 4:30 p.m. MST).

Brethren and friends, do we ever stop to think about our spiritual priorities (Matthew 6:33) when it comes to honoring our Lord who endured six grueling hours on a wooden cross so that we might not have to face an eternal hellfire?

Is the “Stupor“Bowl more important to us than giving one hour in praise and worship to our Heavenly Father on Sunday evening?

Let’s seriously think about it! (Matthew 16:24-27).
