Studies in Genesis – The Creation

1. Man’s habitat is revealed to us in the days of creation.

1) Did God create the world in six literal days?

2) We need to consider Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

3) This verse refutes both the day-age theory and the gap-theory.

4) There is no reason to accept the theory of macro-evolution.

2. The days of creation.

1) Day 1

a. Heavens and Earth

b. Light and darkness.

2) Day 2 – The division between water and air.

3) Day 3

a. The division between the dry land and water.

b. The plant kingdom.

4) Day 4 –

a. The celestial bodies (Sun, Moon, Stars).

b. Herein is the explanation for the origins of time keeping, days, months, years.

5) Day 5

a. Water animals.

b. Air animals.

6) Day 6

a. Land animals and insects.

b. Man.

7) Day 7 – God rested – Genesis 2:1-3

a. Herein is the explanation of the seven day week.

b. Herein is also the explanation for a day of rest and worship.

3. Everything that God does is good!

1. Man is made in the image of God.

1) Man is not made in the image of beast.

2) Man is not made in the image of other men.

2. Man is the ruler of the earth.

1) The text says he has “dominion.”

2) This word means “to rule” or “to reign.”

3) It doesn’t mean “to conquer.”

4) The teaching, however, is that the earth was made for man, not man for the earth.

5) Many false religions today teach just the opposite.

6) Nature is not to be worshipped, but rather, managed.

3. Man is made both male and female.

1) God’s design all along was for there to be both.

2) There is equality between male and female by order of creation.

3) This refutes the notion of the domination of man over woman.

4) It also refutes the notion of woman’s domination over man.

5) God made man both male and female so that they could populate the earth.

6) Herein is the principle that God doesn’t do that which man can do.

7) We also note the principle of biogenesis – like produces like.

1. Man has an obligation to work.

1) God created a garden in which for man to live.

2) Man was expected to dress and keep the garden.

3) 2 Thess. 3:12 “Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.”

4) Ephesians 4:28 ” Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.”

2. Man has the obligation to obey God.

1) Man could eat of all the trees in the garden but one.

2) He was forbidden by God to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

1. We have in this passage the story of the special creation of woman.

2. In that story we learn several things.

3. God didn’t want man to be alone.

4. God wanted man to have a help and support suitable for him.

5. Woman was made out of man’s rib – his side – as an equal.

6. Man and woman together form the nucleus of society, the family.

7. Jesus would return to these scriptures to explain the doctrine of marriage and family in Matthew 19:1ff.
