Sermon on the Mind of Christ

INTRODUCTION: Philippians 2:5-11

A. Concerning the likeness of a father and son, we have heard statements like these:

1. “Like father like son”

2. Or, “he’s a chip off the old block”

B. To say this is to declare:

1. That the son is a copy, a reproduction, or a replica of the father.

2. Thus, they like the same things, they have the same values, and have the same appearance.

C. 1 Corinthians 11:1

1. Here we are informed of the need to imitate Christ

a. We need to be a chip off the Corner Stone

b. We need to be a replica of Jesus

2. Why?

a. Jesus is our perfect example

b. 1 Peter 2:21-22

D. Philippians 2:5-11

1. Paul tells us here that we are to have the mind of Christ

2. Paul tells us in this context what it takes to have the mind of Christ.

DISCUSSION

A. TO HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST IS TO HAVE A MIND OF SACRIFICE

1. Philippians 2:6-7

2. Our Lord sacrificed the blessings of heaven for us

a. Jesus “counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped” or “robbery to be equal with God” (KJV) because He was God, _ He is “in the form of God,” i.e. Jesus is identical with God

b. Jesus gave up all the comforts of heaven to be a servant on the earth

c. Hebrews 4:15 ……. this He did not have to do!!!

3. Jesus sacrificed His own life for us

a. Jesus left the perfection of to go to the pain of the cross

b. The agony of the cross ..

1) Trial

2) Scourging

3) Cross

c. John 10:17-18

4. To have the mind of Christ we MUST also have a mind of sacrifice

a. Romans 12:1-2

b. We must be willing to sacrifice:

1) Worldly pleasures

2) Family

3) Friends

4) Social status

B. TO HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST IS TO HAVE A MIND OF HUMILITY

1. Philippians 2:8a

a. Jesus being God took on the form of man

b. In comparison, this would be like a man taking on the form of a worm

2. Of great significance here is the word “humbled”

a. It comes from etapeinwsen which means to make low, to bring to the ground

b. “Humiliation” would be our closest English word

c. Jesus was humiliated, dishonored and disgraced in taking on the form of a man

d. Our Lord suffered this humiliation on a daily basis

3. Have you ever been humiliated?

a. James 4:10

b. Luke 14:11

4. We must except humiliation

a. Acts 5:41

b. But remember- Romans 8:18

C. TO HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST IS TO HAVE THE MIND OF OBEDIENCE

1. Philippians 2:8b

2. Jesus had a mind of obedience

a. Jesus said- John 4:34

1) Obedience if what He hungered and thirsted for

2) His very reason for being

b. John 6:38

1) Jesus was always concerned about doing the Father’s will

2) Jesus was not concerned about what He wanted, but the Father

c. John 17:4

1) Jesus glorified the Father through His obedience

2) Jesus did not leave His Father’s work undone

d. John 19:30

1) Jesus would not let even death keep Him from obeying His Father

2) What will it take to keep us from being obedient?

3. We MUST have a mind of obedience

a. Hebrews 5:8-9

1) Jesus became perfect in obedience

2) We must be obedient is we want to be saved

b. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9

1) Punishment awaits the disobedience

2) Could there be a greater reason than this to have a mind of obedience?

c. 1 John 3:22

1) There are rewards for obedience

2) Rewards in this life, and most importantly in the life to come

CONCLUSION

A. Notice what the end result was of Jesus having a mind of sacrifice, a mind of humility, and a mind of obedience:

1. Philippians 2:9-11

a. The Father exalted Jesus

b. In the end everyone will know that Jesus is the Christ, and will give Him glory.

c. The sad thing is, for many it will be too late

2. If we will have the mind of Christ, we will be exalted!

B. To have the mind of Christ is to have a mind of:

1. Sacrifice

2. Humility

3. Obedience

C. Do you have the Mind of Christ?
