baptism sermon outline

Baptism Sermon Outline. Lesson outline by G. E. Watkins on the need to be baptized in water for the remission of sins. God has commanded that we be baptized.

INTRODUCTION: Read Mark 16:16 [Beginning of this baptism sermon outline]

1. Divisions exist because of the passage.

2. Did Jesus teach that baptism is necessary for salvation?

3. What, after all, does “baptized” mean?

4. Is the baptism that saves Holy Spirit baptism as many believe?

DISCUSSION: (Discussion of this baptism sermon outline.)

I.   The Command Itself.

1. The scope, v. 15; Matt. 28:18-20; Gal. 3:26-29 – Universal.

2. The subject – one with sufficient mental capacity to believe, repent (Luke 24:46-47), confess (Rom. 10:9-10; Matt. 10:32-33; Acts 8:37), and submit (Acts 2:38; 22:16).

3. The Result – Salvation.

1) Some will cry that majority believe otherwise,

a. Must not follow a multitude to do evil, Exod. 23:2.

b. Christ will judge, not the majority, John 12:48.

c. The majority can keep one from doing the will of God, John 12:42-43.

d. Because of the majority many reject the counsel of God, Luke 7:30.

2) The Bible says, Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16; 1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:27; 1 Pet. 3:21.

II.  The Meaning of Baptism.

1. Without context a word means nothing. Since salvation is at stake we need to know what Jesus means.

2. There are several baptisms mentioned in the New Testament. We want the one that saves.

3. John baptized for the remission of sins, Mark 1:4-5 (Done in Jordan); Matt. 3:16 (in water); John 3:23 (much water).

4. Illus. Acts 8:38-39

5. A burial, Rom. 6:3-4; Col. 2:12.

III. Is the baptism that saves Holy Spirit baptism?

1. If so it would be the one baptism of Eph. 4:5 (64 AD).

2. The one baptism must be the one to last to the end, be performed by men, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in all nations, Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:16.

3. Holy Spirit Baptism administered by Christ, Matt. 3:11.

CONCLUSION: [End of this baptism sermon outline]

1. The Bible teaches that in order for men to be saved they must obey God’s command to be baptized for the remission of sins.

2. Man does not have to understand God’s reasoning on the matter. Man simply must obey.

3. The majority stubbornly reject God’s command and so reject God’s salvation, just like in the days of Noah.

4. Don’t be in that majority.
