PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will answer the questions, 1) Why do we need a teacher? 2) Who is our Teacher and why is He our Teacher? 3) What are we to be taught?

Objectives: That each could explain why he needs to be taught, who needs to teach him, and what he is to learn.

Aim: That we would each understanding the role God has placed on teaching and that we would each desire to be taught.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: John 3:1-2

2. About the Text:

1) It had not been long since Jesus began his ministry, yet he was making a profound impact.

2) The leaders of the Jewish people were taking notice of him.

3) One of those leaders was Nicodemus, a Pharisee.

4) In John 3 Nicodemus comes to Jesus at night to ask a question.

5) In so doing, Nicodemus acknowledges Jesus authority.

6) He had seen the miracles that were done and came to the conclusion that Jesus was sent from God.

7) Nicodemus also acknowledged that Jesus was a teacher.

3. About the study.

1) The title of this study comes from one of the songs in our book, “Savior, Teach Me.”

2) Those three words struck me as fundamental.

3) To be a Christian, one must be taught and one needs to continue to be taught.

a. You can’t become a Christian by birth.

b. You can’t become a Christian by accident.

c. You can’t become a Christian by intuition.

d. You can’t become a Christian by reasoning about the physical world.

e. Only by being taught can we become and remain God’s people.

4) To be a Christian one must look to the Savior to be taught.

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION:

I.   Why do we need a teacher?

1. Because we don’t have the answers ourselves.

1) Jeremiah 10:23 “The way of man is not in himself.”

2) Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right unto a man….”

3) Proverbs 3:5-6 “lean not to thy own understanding”

4) Man left to his own devices doesn’t have all the answers.

2. Because we can’t provide the plan for our own salvation.

1) Man has a sin problem. Isaiah 59:2

2) Man can’t solve this problem on his own. Romans 6:23

3) Man needs someone to teach him God’s will in reference to our sins.

3. Because God has chosen teaching as His means of communicating with man.

1) John 6:45 “It is written in the prophets, And they shall all be taught of God. Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.”

2) John 14:26 “But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.”

3) Matthew 28:18-20 “Go into all the world and make disciples… baptizing them… teaching them….”

4) Acts 2:42 “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.”

II.  Who is our Teacher and Why is He our Teacher?

1. Who is our Teacher?

1) Jesus is the teacher and the only teacher.

a. John 13:13 “Ye call me, Teacher, and, Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.”

b. Matthew 23:8 “But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your teacher, and all ye are brethren.”

2) He is a good teacher; He teaches what He is assigned to teach.

a. John 7:16 “Jesus therefore answered them and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.”

b. John 8:28-29 “Jesus therefore said, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as the Father taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me; he hath not left me alone; for I do always the things that are pleasing to him.”

3) He is not a teacher in name only, but an example of what He teachers.

a. John 13:14 “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.”

b. Matthew 20:28 “even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

2. Why is Jesus our Teacher?

1) Because He is the One that God sent to Teach us.

a. Nicodemus concluded correctly. Jesus is a teacher come from God.

b. John 5:36 “But the witness which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father hath given me to accomplish, the very works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.”

c. Acts 2:22 “Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as ye yourselves know….”

2) Because He has seen God and can teach us about God.

a. John 1:18 “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.”

b. Matthew 11:27 “All things have been delivered unto me of my Father: and no one knoweth the Son, save the Father; neither doth any know the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son willeth to reveal him.”

c. 1 John 5:20 “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.”

3) Because He gave His life so that we might learn.

a. John 12:32 “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto myself.”

b. 1 Peter 3:18 “Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit….”

c. Ephesians 2:16-18 “…and might reconcile them both in one body unto God through the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: and he came and preached peace to you that were far off, and peace to them that were nigh: for through him we both have our access in one Spirit unto the Father.”

III. What are we taught?

1. To Believe

1) In God and Jesus – John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled: believe in God, believe also in me.”

2) In the power of Jesus to save – John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

3) In the gospel – Mark 1:15 “and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe in the gospel.”

2. To Obey

1) Matthew 7:21 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

2) John 14:15 “If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.”

3) Hebrews 5:9 “and having been made perfect, he became unto all them that obey him the author of eternal salvation;”

3. To Love

1) To love God.

a. Matthew 22:37 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”

b. 1 John 5:1-3 “Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.”

2) To love one another.

a. John 13:34 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.”

b. Matthew 22:39 ” And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”

1. “Savior, Teach Me”

1) We need a teacher.

2) Jesus is our teacher.

3) He teaches us God’s will.

2. Invitation

1) Do we want to learn?
