Sermon on Preaching

Introduction: Read Acts 8:12

1. Pentecost (Acts 2) gives us a great example as to what to preach.

1) Every word designed to awaken faith in Jesus.

2) Then to motivate the audience to faithful obedience.

2. But did the next evangelists follow the same pattern? It is good to notice what the next evangelists preached because THAT’S what WE need to preach.

3. About the text:

1) Christians were scattered because of the persecution in Jerusalem (Stephen, Acts 7).

2) They didn’t scatter and hide, they scattered and preached (Acts 8:4), and so we find Philip in Samaria.

3) The Lord worked miracles through him so that the people would believe, John 20:30-31, Mark 16:20; Heb. 2:3-4.

4. The content of his preaching is critical

1) The things concerning the Kingdom of God.

2) The name of Jesus Christ.

5. When they heard these things they believed and obeyed.

6. Because we have been given the job of world evangelism (Matt. 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-47), just like Philip we ought to examine what the New testament has to say about the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ.

DISCUSSION:

I.   THE THINGS CONCERNING THE KINGDOM OF GOD

1. Out of dozens of passages we must choose a few that apply.

2. John 3:3-5, The terms of entrance into the Kingdom of God. V. 7, Ye must be born again…

3. Acts 2, Day of Pentecost.

1) In the terms of pardon (Acts 2:38), the terms of entry into the Kingdom.

2) Repent, be baptized.

3) Added to the Church, v. 47. Church = Kingdom, Matt. 16:18-19.

II.  THE THINGS CONCERNING THE NAME OF JESUS

1. Soul saving name, Matt. 1:21.

2. Name of ultimate authority, Phil. 2:10; Matt. 28:18.

3. In the name … rise and walk, Acts 3:6. POWERFUL

4. Baptized in His name, Acts 2:38; 10:48; 19:5.

1) Why is it important that baptism is in His name?

2) Remember what happened when healing was done in his name? Healing happened.

3) When baptized in his name FORGIVENESS HAPPENS.

III. THE GREAT PATTERN FOR OUR PREACHING IS THEN GIVEN

1. Preach the Word, 2 Tim. 4:1-2.

2. Preach the Faith, Jude 3.

3. Preach the Gospel, Rom. 1:16.

4. Note the similarities, Acts 8:12; Acts 28:23; Acts 28:31.

5. Just like Peter, Acts 2:38, 47; Matt. 16:18-19 (Keys of the Kingdom).

6. Just like Jesus, John 3:3, 5. Born of water and spirit to enter the Kingdom.

7. Ye must be born again, John 3:7

CONCLUSION: 2 Points

1. The Kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus must be first in our preaching.

2. Have you been born again?
