SUBJECT: Biography

TITLE: Lessons from the life of Jeremiah

PROPOSITION: We can learn from Jeremiah’s 1) Denunciations, 2) Examples, 3) Persecutions, 4) Messianic Prophecies.

OBJECTIVES: Each should know more regarding the prophecies, examples, and persecutions of Jeremiah.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Jeremiah 1:4-10

2. About the Text:

1) God called Jeremiah to be a prophet.

2) Jeremiah was evidently a young man.

3) Jeremiah was to speak what God told him to speak.

4) Jeremiah’s words were going to be consequential to the overthrowing of nations.

3. Jeremiah had a very difficult life.

1) He was the son of Hilkiah, one of the priests.

2) He was from the town of Anathoth of Benjamin.

3) His prophesies started in the days of Josiah and continued through until the carrying away of Judah by Babylon.

4) Jeremiah himself was taken down to Egypt with other refugees of Judah.

5) Tradition holds that he was finally murdered in Egypt for his prophesies.

6) He is also the author of the book of Lamentations which is an eye witness account of the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon.

1. The sin of idolatry.

3. The pronouncement of captivity.

1) Jeremiah 13:18, 19

2) Jeremiah 20:1-6 – to Pashur

3) Jeremiah 34 – to king Zedekiah

II.  His Examples

1. Jeremiah 13 – marred girdle.

2. Jeremiah 18 – the potter’s vessel.

3. Jeremiah 24 – the basket of figs.

4. Jeremiah 27 – the bonds and bars.

III. His persecutions.

1. Jeremiah 26:8ff – plot to murder him.

2. Jeremiah 20:2, 3 – Put in stocks

3. Jeremiah 32 – imprisoned.

4. Jeremiah 37:11-21 – imprisoned and put into a dungeon.

IV.  His Messianic Prophecies

1. Jeremiah 23:1-7 – The coming Shepherds and King

2. Jeremiah 31:31-34 – The New Covenant

3. Jeremiah 33:6-17 – Peace and Joy to Come to Jerusalem

CONCLUSION:

1. There are so many more great lessons from the book of Jeremiah.
