Is My Name Written There?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

In our daily walk, we see the importance of having a name that belongs to us for legal purposes. For example, when we write our name on a legal document, it means something, no matter if we are endorsing a check, signing a contract, or signing a car title. If we’re a government employee at a high-security government installation, we have to first identify ourselves as to who we are, and then we have to have our names written on a pre-approved list. If we are not on the list, we cannot enter the facility.

When God writes our name, it has everlasting consequences. As Christians, we need to make certain that God has our names written on His pre-approved list. If our names are not found on that list, we will not be able to enter through the gates into the heavenly city (Revelation 22:14).

Let’s open the Scriptures with regard to the above thoughts:

  • God wants to write our names in the Book of Life and does not want to blot it out (2 Peter 3:9, Revelation 3:5).
  • God keeps accurate records of our name and what is connected to that name (Revelation 20:11-15). If our names are not written in the Book of Life we will be cast into everlasting torment (Matthew 25:46).
  • If our names are written in the Book of Life God will deliver and save us eternally (Daniel 12:1, Isaiah 4:3, Revelation 21:27).
  • We see references to people who had their names written in God’s wonderful book (Luke 10:17-20, Philippians 4:3).

How do we get our name on the pre-approved list in God’s book? (Matthew 7:21-24, James 1:21-25, 2 Peter 1:5-11, 1 John 5:1-5). To have our names written on the list, we must have an obedient faith (Hebrews 11:6; Romans 6:17-18), motivating us to become a New Testament Christian.

Note that it is God who writes our name in the book and the One who can blot us out of it (Exodus 32:30-33).

The question is, “Is My Name Written There?

Lord, I care not for riches,
Neither silver nor gold;
I would be sure of heaven,
I would enter the fold,

In the book of Thy kingdom,
With its page white and fair,
Tell me, Jesus, my Savior,
Is my name written there?

Lord, my sins they are many,
Like the sands of the sea,
But Thy blood, O, my Savior,
Is sufficient for me;

For Thy promise is written,
In bright letters that glow,
Though your sins be as scarlet,
I will make them like snow.

O! that beautiful city,
With its mansions of light,
With its glorified beings,
In pure garments of white;

Where no evil things cometh,
To despoil what is fair;
Where the angels are watching,
Is my name written there?

Chorus:

Is my name written there,
On the page white and fair?
In the book of Thy kingdom,
Is my name written there?Frank M. Davis
