I Am The Way The Truth And The Life Sermon

SUBJECT: Jesus

TITLE: “I Am The Way, the Truth, and the Life”

PROPOSITION: Jesus is 1) The Way, 2) The Truth, and 3) The Life.

OBJECTIVES: Each person should understand the unique nature of these claims and understand that only through Jesus can one come to God the Father.

AIM: I hope to explain to each hearer the exclusive nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: John 14:4-6 “And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

2. About the Text:

1) On the eve of Jesus crucifixion he sits down with his disciples to have the Passover meal with them.

2) During this evening, Judas arises to betray Him.

3) Jesus told the disciples that he would be betrayed and then put to death.

4) Jesus comforts His disciples by giving them the knowledge that they would need to make it through this time.

5) He speaks concerning the place where He is going (v.1).

6) He tells them that this place is prepared for them as well (v.3).

7) Thomas in essence asks “How do we get there, what is the way?”

8) Jesus answer is known as one of the most beloved and quoted scriptures to the faithful.

9) “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

3. I AM series.

1) Here is another great “I am” statement from the book of John.

2) The “I am” statements indicate to us WHO Jesus was.

3) They also tell us more about WHO God is (John 1:18).

4) These statements are exclusive in nature.

4. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION:

I.   Jesus Is The Way

1. There are only two ways.

1) Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Life and Good AND death and evil.

2) Two masters Matthew 6:24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”

3) Two gates and ways. Matthew 7:13, 14 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

2. This way is the strait way.

1) The word strait means “narrow” or “difficult.”

2) As we just read in Matthew 7:13, 14 Jesus way is a strait way–a narrow way.

3) Being a Christian is a struggle.

a. Jude 3 “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (agnonizomai — agnonize.)

b. Ephesians 6:2 “For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

4) Being a Christian requires effort and sacrifice. Luke 9:23 ” And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

3. This is “the way” of Christians.

1) Acts 16:17 “The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.”

2) Acts 18:26 “And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.”

3) Acts 24:14 “But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:”

4. This is “the way” to heaven.

1) Matthew 7:14 “Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

2) Those that walk this road will receive eternal life. Romans 2:7 “To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:”

II.  Jesus Is The Truth

1. Jesus is the Word of God.

1) John 1:1, 14

2) John 8:31 “If you continue in my word then are you my disciples indeed.”

2. The Word of God is truth.

1) John 17:17 “Sanctify them in thy truth; thy word is truth.”

2) Psalm 119:160 ASV “The sum of thy word is truth; And every one of thy righteous ordinances endureth for ever.”

3) 1 Thessalonians 2:13 “For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.”

3. The truth makes us free from sin.

1) John 8:32 “Ye shall know the truth . . . .”

2) Romans 8:2 “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

3) Gal. 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

4. The truth brings us to heaven.

1) Those who live by the truth have their names in the book of life. Philippians 4:3 “And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life.”

2) Those who overcome will remain in the book of life. Rev. 3:5 “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.”

3) Those who reject the truth will not be found in the book of life. Revelation 20:5 “And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

III. Jesus Is The Life

1. Without Him there is no life.

1) He is creator. John 1:1ff

2) Upholds all things by the word of his power. Hebrews 1:3

3) In him all things consist. Colossians 1:17 “And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

2. There is however, a great death coming.

1) This death is the result of sin. Romans 6:23

2) This death is eternal separation from God. Revelation 21:8 “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

3) The ungodly shall suffer this second death. “But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.” (2 Peter 3:7).

3. He gives salvation from the second death–this is LIFE ETERNAL!

1) Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord”

2) Hebrews 7:25 ” Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.”

3) John 10:10 “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”

CONCLUSION:Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

1. The rest of the story.

1) Jesus statement after proclaiming that he was the way, the truth and the life was as follows: “No man cometh to the Father but by me.”

2) This is an exceptive statement. It means all and only.

3) All those who come by Jesus may come to the Father and only those who come by Jesus may come to the Father.

4) If the opposite is true–if there are other ways to God than through Jesus, then these statements simply cannot be true.

5) Jesus is THE ONLY way to God today.

6) Will you follow Him as He is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE?!

2. Invitation

1) If you are a Christian but have fallen away

a. What other way do you think you can pursue and be pleasing to God? What other truth? What other life?

b. Come back to the one and only way today.

2) If you are not a Christian this morning . . .

a. You need to heed the way that Jesus preached; you need to follow the way that Paul followed.

b. You need to heed the way for man’s salvation today!

a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”

b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”

c) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).

d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16).

e) Be baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15-16).

  2. Gabrielle Stanley says:

The began to speak to me about the way the truth the life that jesus is. And I was led to your site. I have read this Preacher File and enjoyed it. I would like to add something that would hopefully build you up. I notice in the introduction area points 3 and 4 Left me disappointed thinking some good food was immediately following the appetizer. I was taken aback, thrown off from following closely the sermon. A little further reading restored my excitement about the word being given. That was the only place I disconnected from the sermon. I would suggest relocate to the beginning of the introduction, or omition because it did not follow with the conversation. AND AT THE END YOU ALL THE REQUIRED STEPS FOR THE INVITATION, THEY ARE NOT ORDERED ACCURATELY. HEAR, REPENT, CONFESS, BELIVE, AND BAPTISM IS THE ACCURATE WAY OF THINGS IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND OF CHRIST. MUCH LOVE BRETHREN PURE ( CLEAN, HOLY ) LOVE ( UNCONDITIONAL, AGAPE)

    • It just doesn’t stand to reason or the scriptures to have repent and confess before believe. I’d like to know how one can know that Christ commands to repent and confess Christ as the Son of God before one believes. That simply makes no sense.

      • Blake says:

I can’t agree with you more. Is it possible to believe and repent at the same time, to confess what you believe and as a result of salvation by grace through faith we are born again? How we arrive at our destination is very important Jesus is the way!!

  3. Herman McHan says:

I would like to correct Gabrielle Stanley, you do have the plan of salvation in the proper oreder. I am not sure what Bible he reads in order to put repent and confess ahead of believe. Why does one repent and confess? The obvious answer is because of faith (belief). GreatSermon!

  4. Rev. Michael Gbenday says:

No matter how you view it Jesus has been the way, the truth and the life yesterday, he is today and will be forever. Good sermon. God bless you. I am blessed.

  5. believe h
    He is the way

    Romans 10:17 and
    Luke 8:8 comes to mind

you can hear and not believe
however you can’t believe without hearing

in my opinion the sermon is good.

  6. Gloria Wheeler says:

I was bless by this sermon, in regard to Gabrielle, in what order does the Word of God in Romans 10:9 puts it? The order does not matter as long as the truth is there. Thanks God bless you and continue the good work of spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

  7. Interfaith chaplain Alastair Clark says:

Jesus came to Earth to heal. Those who are well have no need of him he is reported as telling us. Whoever lives a Christlike life will have eternal life whether they believe in who Jesus was or not Jesus abhorred discrimination or exclusiveness. The sermon is good in that it stimulated this thought!

  8. Kevin Cauley says:

So Mr. Clark, you don’t believe that Jesus really made this statement, “No man comes to the Father but by me”?

  9. Interfaith chaplain Alastair Clark says:

I don’t know, but the Jesus I know would never exclude those who lived the way he taught or had never heard of him.

  10. Kevin Cauley says:

Well, if you don’t accept what the Bible says, then whose to say that you know the real Jesus? I think I’ll go with what the Bible says, thanks.

  11. Interfaith chaplain Alastair Clark says:

The Bible is not true but, by golly, it contains the Truth – we have to use the brains our creator gave us to find that Truth out. Thanks for your input.

  12. Kevin Cauley says:

Ok, so what absolute rational principle determines what part of the Bible is true and what part is false?

  13. Interfaith chaplain Alastair Clark says:

We have to pray about it, and read it over and over, and think.
    AMEN.

  14. buck ratliff says:

I thank god his son jesus christ is the only way if it was left up to man it would be like the comments you got about believing or the plan of salvation or what order, man would get it in such a mess no one would understand. It would be best to read the bible and believe what it says, if you are to meke it to that home in heaven.

    thank you

  18. Parker says:

The Bible is True in its entirety, God would not lie about his Word or what it takes to make Heaven your home. If you believe you live a Christlike life, but have never accepted Christ as your Savior, then how can you really be Christlike. Have you been Born Again in your Christlikeness? Unless you are born again…this comes from faith in Him who died for you. I pray that this is helpful to you, as for the sermon on The Way, the Truth, and the Life…great word.

  19. Ron says:

The entrance to The Outer Court of the temple of YHVH (GOD) is called “The WAY”
The entrance to The Inner Court of the temple of YHVH (GOD) is called “The TRUTH”
The entrance to The HOLY of HOLIES of the temple of YHVH (GOD) is called “The LIFE”
The Presence of YHVH (GOD)manifested in
    The HOLY of HOLIES.

    YESHUA said- Ah-ni-kee- I Am
    ha-derek- The WAY
    v’ha-emmet- and The TRUTH
    V’ha-ka-yim- and The LIFE

When ???? -YESHUA (JESUS) spoke these words,
HE was painting a picture of HIMSELF.
There is ONLY ONE WAY to enter The HOLY of HOLIES and that is through the three entrances.
YESHUA revealed to us that HE is
The Embodiment of these three entrances.
Each of the drapes was designed with
    -Scarlet- for HIS Blood
    -Purple- for HIS Kingship
    -T’chellit (similar to Turquois)
for The Throne Room of YHVH (GOD)
The Temple itself(more specifically The Tabernacle)
is a prophecy of YESHUA ha Mashiach
    (JESUS The Messiah).
It is only by Following HIM that we may see The FATHER (GOD)

    • David says:

In what study can I find that the entrances to the outer and inner courts, and the Holy of Holies are called way, truth, and life?

I want to study that out for myself. Is it in scripture specifically, or other study manuals that describe scripture and the culture of the people?

      Thanks Ron

  20. Robert says:

What is “TRUTH” If it is the word of god then what can be said to be not true?
If ‘TRUTH’ is the word of god and it is found in the bible then this word can only be voice by listening to or reading the bible. Therefore, ‘TRUTH’ is open to interpretation by that books audience. If god desires that people know ‘TRUTH’ (and we might take the sacrifice of Jesus as evidence for this) why wouldn’t he ensure that it couldn’t be misinterpreted?

    • The bible is based as the true word of God. This doctrine is GOD the fathers instuction to his Son Jesus, to teach the world to change from death to life, which was caused through disobedence of Adam. Today believers are falling short of the kingdom because of their interpretation which destroys the scriptures and weakens the Kingdom of God.This is why the bible says, my people perish through the lack of knowledge. This is why christians fail.Jesus said be led by my spirit, not by your own understanding. To all believers, if Jesus is the way the truth and the life, you will never be LOST.Jesus said i didn’t come to bring peace,i came to bring the sword which is the WORD. God said if anyone takes away the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away* his part from the Book* of Life, from the holy city and from the things which are written this book. Please Saints do not try to interpret the WORD, YOU WILL FAIL.Jesus is the WORD not US! Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, means the WORD does not change, only man tries to change the word.Jesus warns us about the false teachers and prophets which are in the churches now across the nations. this is why the churches have lost their way. HOW DO I KNOW?…By their Fruit….Amen.

  21. The Way, the Truth and the Life is an hendyatris, a figure of speech called “three for one”. According to Bullinger’s Figures of speech used in the Bible an hendiatris (similar to hendyadis–two for one) one idea is express and it is followed by three other nouns or verbs that describe it or function as adjectives. Thus,in John 14.6, the idea is centered on the Way, which is the context of going to the Father. It could be translated: I am the true and living way. He is the true way and all other paths are false (Acts 4.12). He is the living way because all other paths lead to death (Prov. 14.12). Jesus claims here to be the one and only way to the Father.

That could be a two-part outline. Or, the passage could begin at 13:36-14 and the outline could follow the questions that are asked by Peter, Thomas and Phillip. I. Going to the Father; II. Revealing the Father.

The comment about the features of the temple are intriguing. Is there a source to look those up? (Hebrews 10.19?) The “Father’s House” in the NT, especially where it is used in chapter 2, is the temple. The temple did have many rooms. “Father’s House” could mean Jesus Himself and that God’s presence is available in the present for the follower of Christ. It at least means the “heavenly” temple where God dwells. It could also have a double meaning (which John is fond of using, it seems, like “night” throughout his gospel) where it includes both the presence of God now and in the end. The preparation done might be the way that is prepared through his death (cf. heb. 10.19-). Thank you.

God blessed us, sent His one and only son Jesus, to die for our sins and make us a new creature.

  26. saspsyche says:

We must remember that when Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life”, he was speaking with the authority of God the Father. Because God gave His Son as a sacrifice for our sin, He will not tolerate anyone refusing His Son. The bible says that God will, “In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thess. 1:18 If people refuse Christ, they have no hope.

  27. Willie Douthit says:

I can’t agree with you more. More people need here more about the great I AM. That Jesus able to fix anthing if we will just move out of his way.

yes i believed in JESUS CHRIST only, i want to more learning Holy Bible. He uses forgiven for us save life.

  30. JR Morley says:

and who am I through whom we must pass? I am Jesus, the one who loves his neighbor, even his enemies. I am the one who taught us how to act through the parable of the Good Samaritan. I am the one who instructed the righteous way through my life of service to others without exception, without limitation. I am the son of the one God who created all of mankind.

If we try to live our lives as Jesus would want, if we make decisions based on love, on inclusiveness, on concerns for the well-being of others, we will have found the way; regardless of where we live, in which religious tradition we live, which race, which tongue, which education, which political persuasion.

  31. JOB001 says:

To not limit God(even by name): Moses was instructed to refer to God as “I AM WHO I AM”?
To not limit God to one faith Jesus accepted us gentiles.
Why misinterpret Jesus to limit(not his intention) faith to us Christians only?
The Bible interpreted without limit upon God or Jesus is: No man comes to the father except by the way, the truth, and the life (Jesus self defined).
Jesus defined himself clearly and overcame the prejudice that God belonged exclusively to one team.
We can follow Jesus way, life, and God’s truth without prejudice and yet we are tempted to limit God and limit Jesus.
However, in truth, we cannot limit infinite eternal God or Jesus.

  32. Ken says:

The Way of God that was followed by Paul and Early believers is the only Way,the Waymaker Himself makes a Way for us when there doesnt seem to be a Way, and a i am on the Way with Him my life takes on meaning as His disciple, sold out , led by the spirit, empowered by the Spirit, and mentored by the Living Way Himself seeking to fulfill the Mission this day.

  33. louis says:

when jesus said I am the way truth and life,he did not mean that he is the way to the father only, what he neant was very cryptic……each one of us is THE WAY TRUTH AND LIFE,no one can save us,jesus is misinterpreted……we have to go to the father all alone…from where we started our journey…..do you get it…..the church (I am not a christian, but with jesus only)got it upside-down…jesus was like us,we have to hear what jesus says very attentively…..he shows the way only….we have to walk the path, otherwise we have to wander forever……..gnostic.louis
