SUBJECT: Jesus
TITLE: I am the Lord and Master
TYPE: Expository
PROPOSITION: Jesus is the our Lord and Master. He says that as Lord and Master he became a servant of all.
OBJECTIVES: We should all think about how Jesus is our Lord and Master and how since he called himself a servant, that we should much more see ourselves as servants.
AIM: I want to impress upon each one the distinctive, yet complimentary roles as Lord, Master, and Servant within the person of Jesus.
INTRODUCTION:
1. Read: John 13:12-16 “So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.”
2. About the Text:
1) The Lord had made all of the preparations to observe the Passover with his disciples.
2) This was going to be the last Passover which he observed with them.
3) Upon entering the premises, the twelve begin arguing as to who was going to wash the others feet.
4) It was a custom of the day to wash feet. (Explain)
5) Jesus was the host of the feast, but he washed the apostles feet.
3. I am statements.
1) Jesus says in this context that he is the Lord and Master.
2) There are none other lords or masters.
3) He also shows us here a great example of servitude.
4) Things are different in the kingdom than in the world.

DISCUSSION:
I. Jesus is our Lord and Master
1. He is the Lord
1) He is Lord of the earth.
a. He made it. John 1:1-3 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.”
b. Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.”
c. Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.”
d. 1 Corinthians 8:5 “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”
2) He is Lord of the nations.
a. Colossians 1:16 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
b. Revelation 1:5a NKJV “and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.”
c. Ephesians 1:21 “Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:”
d. 1 Peter 3:22 “Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.”
e. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords. 1 Tim. 6:15; Rev. 17:14; Rev. 19:16.
3) He is Lord of all men.
a. 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
b. Philippians 2:9-11 “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
c. Romans 14:11-12 “For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”
d. He is your Lord.
e. Will you bow to Him now or wait until it is too late for Him to save you?
2. He is the Master
1) He is the Master of the house.
a. As Master he assigns responsibilities and tasks. Mark 13:34-37 “For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
b. As Master he sets the hours for entering and exiting the house. Luke 13:25 “When once the master of the house is risen up, and hath shut to the door, and ye begin to stand without, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know you not whence ye are:”
c. As Master he determines who may come into the feast and who will never taste of it. Luke 14:21-24 “So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.”
2) He is the Master of the bride.
a. The bride is the church. Revelation 21:2, 9
b. Those who are Christians are married to Christ. Romans 7:1-4
c. Ephesians 5:22-32 “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.”
3) He is the Master of the servants.
a. We must confess that we are unprofitable servants. Luke 17:10 “So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.”
b. We are to have the mind of Christ as a servant. Philippians 2:5
c. The Father is honored when we serve Him. John 12:26 “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”
d. The example of the writers of the New Testament make it clear that he is our master.
a) Romans 1:1 “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God”
b) Jude 1:1 “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:”
c) 2 Peter 1:1 “Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:”
d) James 1:1 “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.”
e. All Christians are servants of Christ. Revelation 1:1a “The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants.”
II. Jesus is the Servant.
1. He is the servant of His Father.
1) It was prophesied that he would be a servant.
a. Isaiah 42:1 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.”
b. Isaiah 52:13 “Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.”
c. Isaiah 53:11 “He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.”
2) He came to the earth to be a servant.
a. Matt. 20:28 “Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
b. Luke 22:27 “For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.”
c. Philippians 2:5-8 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”
3) He always sought to do the Father’s will.
a. John 4:34 “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”
b. John 5:20 “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.”
c. John 8:29 “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.”
2. He is the servant of the church.
1) He serves as the sacrifice for sins.
a. Isaiah 53:4-5 “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
b. Hebrews 9:28 “So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”
2) He now serves as High Priest.
a. Hebrews 4:14-15 “Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”
b. Hebrews 7:26-27 “For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.”
c. Hebrews 8:1 “Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;”
3) He is our advocate.
a. 1 John 2:1 “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:”
b. Romans 8:34 “It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”
c. 1 Tim. 2:5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
3. He is the servant of all men.
1) He serves as the one through whom all men may have forgiveness.
a. 1 John 2:2 “And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
b. 1 John 4:14 “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world.”
c. 1 Tim. 4:10 “For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.”
2) He serves as the one who brings grace to all men.
a. Titus 2:11 “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,”
b. John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
3) He serves as the one who brings light to all men.
a. John 1:9 “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”
b. John 8:12 “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
CONCLUSION:
1. Jesus reveals to us that He, in this context is . . .
1) Lord
2) Master.
3) Servant.
4) What should our response be toward these things?
5) Should not we be willing to be more mindful of being His servant?
2. Invitation
1) If you are a Christian . . .
a. You have stopped acknowledging Jesus as your Lord and Master.
b. Do you no longer believe you are His servant?
c. He stands ready to serve you.
d. Won’t you humble yourself and serve Him?
2) If you are not a Christian this morning . . .
a. Jesus gave everything up so he could serve you.
b. He gave up his life to serve you.
c. Would you give your life to serve Him?
d. Would you acknowledge Him as your Lord and Master today?
a) Hear the word; Romans 10:17 “Faith comes by hearing . . .”
b) Believe with all your heart; Hebrews 11:6 “For without faith it is impossible . . . .”
c) Repent of your sins (Acts 17:30).
d) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Matthew 16:16).
e) Be Baptized for the remission of your sins (Mark 16:15-16).
