Date written: September 25th, 2005
Scripture ref: Job 1:1-8

SUBJECT: Suffering, God

PROPOSITION: In this lesson we will look at several lessons from the book of Job on the subject of suffering.

OBJECTIVE: That each would be able to understand how to deal with suffering in one’s own life and also in the lives of others.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Read: Job 1:1-8

2. About the Text:

1) Job was a righteous man.

2) God told Satan about this.

3) Satan challenged God.

4) God accepted the challenge.

5) Job was tried.

a. By his losses.

b. By his family.

c. By his disease.

d. By his friends.

3. Ref. to S, T, P, O, and A.

DISCUSSION:

I.   Sometimes, the righteous suffer because they are righteous.

1. Job 1:8 “Have you considered my servant Job?”

2. Matthew 5:10-12 “Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness sake.”

3. 2 Timothy 3:12 “yeah all that would live godly..”

II.  It is not wrong to desire death; it is wrong to act upon it.

1. Job 3:20-21 Job desired death.

2. Hebrews 9:27 Death is appointed for all men.

3. Proverbs 6:16-17 It is sinful to take innocent blood whether it is one’s own or another’s.

III. Those who are suffering need comfort, not criticism.

1. Job 6:14 “To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend”

2. Job 16:5 “But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.”

3. Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

4. Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.”

IV.  God isn’t necessarily responsible for suffering.

1. Job 6:4 “For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.”

2. Galatians 6:7,8 “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”

3. 1 Peter 5:8 “…seeking whom he may devour.”

V.   God doesn’t act unjustly.

1. Job 8:3 “Doth God pervert judgment? or doth the Almighty pervert justice?”

2. Job 34:12 “Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.”

3. Genesis 18:25 “Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?”

4. Romans 3:4-6 (read).

VI.  Man isn’t the final judge.

1. Job 13:8 “Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?”

2. Matthew 7:1-6 (read)

3. James 4:11 “Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.”

VII. Sometimes the wicked do prosper while the righteous suffer.

1. Job 21:17 “How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out? That their calamity cometh upon them? That God distributeth sorrows in his anger?”

2. Psalm 73:3,12 (read)

VIII.In suffering, God’s silence isn’t necessarily his disapproval.

1. Job 30:20 “I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.”

2. Psalm 22:2 “O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.”

3. Matthew 27:46 “Why hast thou forsaken me?”

IX.  God doesn’t answer to man.

1. Job 33:13 God doesn’t give account to man as if man were God’s boss. “Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.”

2. Job 41:10,11 If man can’t stand before God’s creation, how much less can he stand before God? ” None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me? Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.”

3. Isaiah 46:10 “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:”

X.   Suffering doesn’t justify sin.

1. Job 36:21 “Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.”

2. Hebrews 11:25 “Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season.”

XI.  Regardless of how much suffering we endure, God is always to be praised.

1. Job 1:21 “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed.”

2. Job 13:15 “Though he slay me yet will I trust him.”

3. Job 35:10 None say where is God who gives songs in the night.

4. Job 40:8 We don’t condemn God to justify ourselves.

CONCLUSION:

1. The book of Job is just as relevant today as it was written thousands of years ago.

2. It is relevant because man still suffers today.

3. God’s word has all of the answers that we look for in life if we will trust it.

4. Have you trusted God’s word today?

5. Invitation
