Genesis 6:5-8

Categories: Bible Study Lessons

After the mingling of the righteous line of Seth with the unrighteous line of Cain mankind became so corrupt that “the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was ONLY EVIL continually.” Mankind became a cesspool of sin. Imagine the evil that goes on behind prison walls, only unrestrained.

God’s only option was destruction. As drastic as it was we reap the blessings of that cleansing today. There exists now a world where good exists. There are streets where one can walk unmolested. There are people everywhere who will help you if you are in need. There exist laws to protect the innocent and restrain evil. There exists kindness and sympathy. Not so if God had not taken severe steps during the days of Noah.

“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord” (v. 8). There are few passages more precious than this one. Because of Noah’s righteousness we live today. God used faithful Noah to preserve man and animal kind. Through Noah the prophecy in Genesis 3:15 was fulfilled. Everyone alive today has God to thank but should save some thanks for Noah. Everyone saved from sin today has God to thank but should save some thanks for Noah. God’s plan for man’s preservation and redemption comes squarely through Noah. Noah is in the line of Christ (Luke 3:36). We would do well to study the life of righteous Noah for those traits that we can emulate.
