Elements Of God's Truth

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Anyone seeking the truth of God, must understand some basic elements of that truth. The following three elements are a necessity to understand:

1) There is a standard of truth — Just like in any area of life, there are standards that must be followed in order to achieve successful results. For example, there is a standard of 12 inches in a foot. Anything more than a foot, would go beyond “the” standard, while anything less than a foot, would be less than “the” standard.

A house built on less or more than “the” standard of measurement, would be a flawed house. The same holds true in the spiritual realm (Psalm 127:1; cf. Mark 12:18-27 KJV — note the word “err“). Also see Romans 10:1-4; cf. Romans 1:16-17), and note the phrase, “the righteousness of God.”

Similarly, God’s Word is “the” standard of spiritual truth (John 17:17; 1 Peter 4:11). Any teaching going beyond that truth, is a teaching that goes beyond the standard (cf. Numbers 22:18; Numbers 24:13). Any teaching less than that truth, is “a” teaching that is less than “the” standard. Both teachings would be false teachings, because they were not based on “the” standard of spiritual truth — God’s Word.

2) God’s truth cannot be changed — No matter how diligent man may try to change God’s truth to “fit” his thinking or lifestyle, it cannot be successfully changed (Romans 1:25-32; Gal. 1:6-12).

An individual may turn his ears away from God’s truth (2 Timothy 4:2-4; cf. Matthew 13:15), or fall away from it (James 5:19-20; cf. 2 Timothy 4:10), or go onward and not abide in it (2 John 9 KJV; cf. John 8:44 KJV), but he cannot ever change it. Because of the unchangeable nature of God’s truth, an individual can only change himself by its unchangeable teaching.

3) God’s truth is still truth, no matter if I believe it or not — God’s truth is not affected by my disbelief or rejection of it. All of the doubters in the world, won’t keep the truth of God from being the truth (Matthew 24:37-39; cf. Genesis 6:5-7; Genesis 7). The flood waters came, no matter how many doubters there were.

As followers of Christ, let us be committed to upholding an obeying God’s unchangeable truth (Titus 1:9; 2 Timothy 1:13; 1 Peter 1:22), in its entirety (cf. Genesis 6:22; Exodus 40:16) — the spiritual standard by which all will be judged (John 12:48; Acts 17:31; Romans 2:16).

Brethren and friends, may we willingly seek a “Thus saith the Lord” in every spiritual matter (Colossians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 10:31).
