Drink Responsibly?

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

Every day on one of our local radio and television stations, I’ve been listening to a beer commercial encouraging people to “drink responsibly” during the upcoming Super Bowl football game. Knowing that the consumption of only one alcoholic drink adversely effects the human body (see research guidelines & alcohol questions), my question has always been, “How can anyone be responsible after they’ve consumed one drink?” (See Brown University article and chart for definition of what “one drink” constitutes).

From looking at the chart in the above article, we can plainly see that after consuming only “one drink“, there is a “slight intensification of mood.” An individual can become either more aggressive in mood or more docile in mood, depending on an individual’s personality, body mass, and how long it takes for the consumed alcohol to take effect. Thus, there is a degree of irresponsibility that takes place after consuming only “one drink.”

There’s a multiplicity of statements that folks come up with for justifying the consumption of alcoholic beverages — none of which are viable in God’s eyes (Proverbs 20:1; cf. Genesis 9:21; 1 Corinthians 10:12).

Brethren and friends, do we honestly think that we can consume just “one drink” and be responsible men and women, boys and girls before the Lord? If we do, we are simply deceiving ourselves (Proverbs 20:1 KJV; cf. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 John 1:8; cf. Jeremiah 17:9).

Let’s be godly men and women (2 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Peter 1:15; 2 Peter 3:11) — not drinking any alcoholic beverages (the only exception being for prescribed medicinal purposes — 1 Timothy 5:23) , so that we might be responsible for our actions before the Lord — those actions that our Lord will judge on that last day (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14; John 12:48; 2 Corinthians 5:10; cf. Jeremiah 17:10).
