Children Of God Are Heirs

Categories: Church of Christ Bulletin Articles

The Bible teaches that as children of God, we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). We become children of God when we are “born of water and the Spirit” (John 3:5; cf. Romans 6:3-4; Gal. 3:26-29). As we conform our lives to the teachings of the Holy Spirit, “the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16).

The question is, “What do we inherit as heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ?” The following are some of the blessings that we, as children of God, will inherit as heirs:

  • Heirs of “all things” (1 Corinthians 3:21-23; cf. Revelation 21:7).
  • “Heirs according to the promise” (Gal. 3:29).
  • Heirs of salvation (Hebrews 1:14).
  • “Heirs of righteousness” (Hebrews 11:7).
  • “Heirs of promise” (Hebrews 6:17).
  • “Heirs of eternal life” (Titus 3:7).
  • “Heirs of the kingdom” (James 2:5; cf. 1 Peter 1:3-4).
  • “Heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7).

As children of God, let us be thankful for the blessings we have as heirs, and then as Peter did, praise God for the hope that we have in Christ Jesus (Titus 2:13).

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:3-4).
