Alcohol, Good for Your Health?

Categories: Sermon Outlines, Topical Sermon Outlines

PROPOSITION: To counter the current influence of the medical community with regard to alcohol.

INTRODUCTION:

1. Regarding the text…

1) Aaron and his sons had just been consecrated for their duties.

2) Offerings, according to the instructions of God, are prepared and God consumes them to show His approval and to confirm the priesthood in the eyes of the people.

3) Two priests, Nadab and Abihu, then offered incense to God. They used ‘strange fire’ and were devoured.

4) We then read some instruction that surely was given to help keep this tragedy from recurring. Read Leviticus 10:8-11

5) I’m sure we’ve all read or seen something on the most recent studies about the effects of alcohol. (“One drink a day is good for you. Help you live longer.”)

6) But, is that all there is to it? Millions of consciences have been eased by these reports.

2. Science says its good for you. Does the Bible really say NO? Let’s look at the rest of the story.

3. This hour I would like for us to consider the consequences of that one drink a day.

DISCUSSION:

I.   ALCOHOL TAKES AWAY YOUR JUDGMENT.

1. Consider Leviticus 10:10-11.

1) V. 10. Must know the difference between holy and unholy, unclean and clean.

a. It was holy and clean if done by God’s commands.

b. Uzziah learned the hard way. 2 Chr. 26:16-21.

c. Judgment is essential in rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:14-18. Must know the truth to keep from swerving from it. Must know the difference between truth and error.

2) V. 11. Must know the difference between sound doctrine and false doctrine. 1 Kings 13:1-24; Gal. 1:6-9; 1 Thessalonians 5:21; Titus 2:1.

2. Is there any wonder that we who are the priests in the New Testament order are commanded to be sober?

3. Consider: Do you need all your judgment…

1) Matthew 7:13-14. to find the strait gate?

2) Matthew 7:15-20. to discern false prophets?

3) John 7:14. to judge righteous judgment?

4) John 4:23-24. to worship in spirit and truth?

5) 2 Timothy 4:1-4. to preach the word?

6) 2 Timothy 2:15. to rightly divide the word of truth?

7) 1 Corinthians 11:29. to discern the Lord’s body?

4. No wonder Christians are warned:

1) Romans 13:13.

2) 1 Corinthians 5:11; 6:10

3) Ephesians 5:18. “drunk:” to intoxicate, make drunk, to get drunk, become intoxicated.

II.  CONSIDER THOSE THAT FOLLOW THE ADVISE OF THE MEDICAL WORLD.

1. How many daily drinkers will become problem drinkers?

1) In times of stress drink in excess of “one drink”?

2) How many will commit domestic violence?

2. How many will cause an alcohol related collision resulting in property loss, injury or even death?

3. How many marriages will end because the drinker has a wandering eye while drinking?

4. How many souls will be lost because of the company one keeps while drinking?

5. How many murders because an argument got out of hand?

6. Because of the expense of alcohol:

1) Will the spouse and children be neglected?

2) The church?

7. How many of these will end up in prison; a shame to their families, a burden to society.

III. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE DOCTOR’s ADVICE?

1. Is it good advice for your children? Do you give them a shot a day?

2. Wives do you want your husbands drinking alcohol with all the temptation out there?

3. Husbands, how about your wives?

4. What about your preacher, the one that is charged with preaching you the truth?

5. What about elders, the ones that watch for your souls?

6. There are some things that simply must be repeated to get them across.

1) Some in this audience are still thinking, “The Bible says just don’t get drunk.”

2) The question is, “Do you need to exercise sound judgment”?

3) God’s priests did. Leviticus 10:8-11.

4) You are God’s priests. 1 Peter 2:5.

7. Consider the wisdom of Solomon. Proverbs 20:1.
